I actually was surprised rakeback has lasted as long as it has.

  • Poker revenues are down, more competition for the player entertainment dollars
  • Cost of payment processing has increased, must avoid US financial institutions
  • If US regulation happens the government will be taking a chunk of revenue

How does a poker network stay profitable?  Something has to give and rakeback seems the best choice for the ax. Merge announced last night, effective June 1st, 2011 rakeback will no longer be offered to new players.

If a network is considering being a player in the regulated US marketplace they must plan on how they will be able to survive while paying the expected monies the US government will demand as tribute.... Did I say tribute?  I meant fees  Roll Eyes

I'd say you've hit the nail on the head.  Rakeback is a product of the poker boom of the early 21st century, and we're way past it now.

The question is:  what's to come next?
